Sedation can be a very useful tool when it comes to helping patients with special needs undergo dental treatment. At Clover Hills dental in Surrey, it's our mission to make sure that each of our patients receives the care he or she needs, safely and comfortably.
At Ladner Village Dental, our Delta dentists are committed to providing an excellent dental care experience for every patient. We often adapt the way we provide that care based on individual needs, and this applies to our patients with special needs as well.
At our Surrey dental office, we offer various anesthesia and sedation options to help our patients with special needs undergo the dental treatment they need as safely and comfortably as possible.
How can sedation help?
For a wide range of mental, physical, medical, or psychological reasons, patients with special needs can sometimes find it difficult or in some cases impossible, to undergo dental treatment.
Sedation or anesthesia allow many of our patients to undergo dental care that they might otherwise not have been able to tolerate.
We most commonly use dental sedation for patients with special needs for the following reasons:
- Lack of cooperation
- Cognitive impairments
- Multiple morbidities (co-occurring diseases)
- Pediatric autism
How does the sedation process work?
We start by getting to know our patients, so that we can care for them in a manner that works for their personalities and needs. Depending on a given patient's needs and age, we may also discuss treatment options with a family member or guardian.
Patients with severe impairments or multiple medical problems will be evaluated by an anesthesiologist before dental treatment with anesthesia takes place.
Whatever type of sedation is ultimately settled upon, the patient will be closely monitored through the duration of the procedure by a qualified dental professional.
All patients who undergo sedation dentistry at our practice must be escorted to and from the appointment, as most types of sedation take some time to wear off.
